    Amazon Vine™ Review(What's this?)

What the iPad hath wrought! It seems you can't turn around without hearing about yet another tablet device being introduced (or, in the case of HP, discontinued!) Most of the higher end ones, starting with Apple's iPad and Motorola's Xoom, along with recent offerings from Sony, Samsung, and others, run around $500 at this point. This table, in contrast, runs around a Benjamin, or about 1/5 of that.Does it give those other guys a run for their money? What do you think? Of course not. The manufacturing costs of those other tablets are higher than the retail price of this one. Corners are cut in many places, including the screen (both resolution and how it interacts with your finger) and processor (the one in this table is somewhat slow), as well as ergonomics (this table is a bit heavier, and not as sleek). But all that said, and accepted, the question is: Does this table merit consideration as a starter? Or perhaps as a second tablet to use in places where you don't trust your high end baby, or in the hands of your kids who will probably drop it and kill it in a week? The answer: Yes, absolutely. As long as you understand the limitations. This table features the Android 2.0 operating system. To put that in perspective, the higher end recent tables are running version 3.0, and your phone is probably running 2.2 or 2.3. (That is, if you haven't succumbed to the church of Apple). This means not all Android apps will work on this tablet. It also means the tablet doesn't genearlly support Flash. It does have a low quality YouTube app that is all but worthless. (I will add, to quiet the smart alecs among you, that, yes, you can play tricks and "root" this device and install all kinds of cutesy stuff...but most people aren't going to do that, and even those who have tried have had mixed results). But you can absolutely run the essential basics under Android 2.0, which includes a browser, e-book readers (Amazon's Kindle comes pre-loaded on this one, but you can install Barnes & Nobel's Nook software, as well, if you wish), mail apps, and most other text-y based standard applications. You can't use this with Google's Android Market, but you CAN use it with Amazon's AppStore, which will give you access to pretty much all the apps you might want.So how well does it perform those basic applications, such as e-book reading and web surfing? Pretty well. Is it liquid smooth? No. But it is responsive enough to be pleasant to use. You will definitely some jerkiness in certain operations, but nothing that anyone should consider a deal killer. The screen, while modest in resolution (800x600) is bright enough to allow pleasant reading. This table supports Adobe Reader, which allows you to read .pdf files on it, as well. This table has a resistive type touch screen, rather than the much much much more responsive capacitive based type of screen found on the higher end screens. This means you may have to push harder to get your finger touches to register. If you're used to higher end tablets (or a decent touchscreen phone), you'll definitely notice this. The battery seems to last about 6 hours after a couple of conditioning charges. In the realm of readers/tablets, that's no better than fair, and it's downright anemic compared to dedicated readers such as Amazon's Kindle--although those readers aren't nearly as versatile as this.Along with the features noted, this tablet also supports the playback of mp3 music files and mp4 format video files. There's a media expansion slot that supports up to 32Gb size cards. Some other nits: Booting up on this tablet is relatively slow compared to the experience on the higher priced competition. Responsiveness of the screen to changing the orientation (horizontal/vertical) seems pretty questionable: Sometimes it's too sensitive, sometimes not sensitive as I'd like.On the whole, this isn't the greatest tablet on the market, or even the greatest tablet in my home. But given the price, and assuming you are keeping your expectations in check, this is an excellent tablet for the price.
