I thought I was purchasing a M7003 (The model with the speakers in the side, mini USB, and built in camera), but instead was buying this model...This unit is white and has a single speaker in the back. The speaker quality is barely acceptable but thier is a place to plug in earbuds. It has a built in Mic. It uses a 20 Pin (i-Pod) USB connector. When the connector is plugged in it allows you access to the 1 GB of the Built in Flash Memory (The other 1 GB is reserved for the system files) and the SD card. Both drives will open up on the computer when the cable is plugged in. Overall the construction is of smooth relatively thin plastic and the entire unit is very light weight. This MID is much better for holding in 1 hand for extended periods of time and because of it's shape and weight is more comfortable for this task than larger MIDS. The 7" screen is bright and has a glossy sheen to it, making it unfit for use in full sunlight, however the screen is bright enough and the glare is not so bad, as to allow use during the day on a porch. The touch screen is a resistive type screen and works best (1000% times better) when used with a stylus. the user manual is not very helpful and after being read once can be safely deposited into the recycle bin.Overall I was pleasantly surprised with it's performance.Out of the box (With the original firmware, no swap, default screen brightness, normal rotate, and the screen not calibrated) the interface is usable but slow. The screen rotates very slowly, the gravity sensor isn't very responsive, and is not very responsive to touch. Wifi will work within about 40 feet of a wifi hub. The farm game works, The notepad works, the MP3 Player works, The photo browser works, YouTube doesn't work, The included Marketplace (Called App Market has some very interesting apps) works, Documents to Go does not work, and Fing is in Chinese and does not seem to work. Out of the box with wifi on and with the defualt settings the battery time is about 2 hours, with moderate/heavy usage. If you go to the Eken website they have an upgrade for the firmware (This fixes Youtube and seems to make the wireless work better along with fixing a few of the other issues). Installing the firmware is as easy as downloading it (To a computer), decompress the file (7Zip), move the folder called script to the top directory of an SD Card (Attached to your computer), Plug in the M001 (Make sure it is off), Take the SD card out of the computer and put the SD Card into the MID, and then turn on the device. Make sure the MID is plugged in the whole time it is upgrading the firmware.Even with the upgraded firmware fixes there are more responsive/cleaner modified ROMS you could replace it with such as the Ecotox or Relax firmware. With the modified ROMs and screen brightness reduced to 40%, I was getting wifi at 80+ feet from the router and much better battery life (3-3.5 hours) plus a much more responsive device.Regardless of which ROM is used the screen should be calibrated with either a stylus or a mechanical pencil with the lead fully retracted. Do not calibrate with your finger. After the screen is properly calibrated the screen will work much better even if you use your finger. The screen's brightness should also be adjusted as soon as possible as it will increase the battery life.Overall the gravity sensor isn't that great. At times, especially when you apps that have a pre-set orientation are opened, the sensor will stop working until the device is turned to the orientation that the app was in for about 5-10 seconds then turning the screen the way you want it to be. It takes about 2 seconds for the screen to rotate.Adding a Swap File(See the slate droid site on how to do this) and using the slimmed down custom ROMs will increase the performance drastically. The controls are pretty easy to master... The center button takes you back/exits the app, the + and - buttons adjust the volume and perform other functions in some apps. Pushing the menu will bring you to the menu in the app you are in (If it is the home screen you can see and access the notifications at the top of the screen without fiddling with the tiny button at the top). Pushing home takes you to your home screen and out of the app you are in. Sliding your finger upwards scrolls the screen/text down while sliding it downwards move the screen/text up. Tapping the app or link will select it.Overall a very useful device for E-Books (Several readers available), checking E-mail, casual music, casual surfing of the internet, watching youtube videos, managing your calender, viewing digital photos, and for playing puzzle games.
